The Top 8 Free Keyword Research Tools

One of the most important aspects of making a successful e-commerce store is SEO. Mind you, SEO tools are expensive. So, what you need are free keyword research tools.

I personally use SEMrush, and it costs me $99 per month.

SEMrush is great if you are hellbent on ranking high on Google, or if you are servicing clients who have the same intent. But if you do not have this same budget, your only recourse is to use free keyword research tools.

And boy, there is a ton of them. But which ones are the best? Today, I will share with you the eight that I have used before.

These keyword research tools are:

  1. Answer the Public
  2. LSI Graph
  3. UberSuggest
  4. Google Alphabet Soup
  5. Google Trends
  6. Google Keyword Planner
  7. Keywordtool.IO
  8. Keyword Sheeter

These keyword tools are for free, but there are limitations as to what they can do. Nevertheless, they should be able to help you start our SEO campaign for your e-commerce store or blog.

It is not a question of whether keyword tools are necessary or not—you need them. It is only an issue of how much value you need. For me, I prefer SEMrush as it has all the tools that I need from a keyword research software.

1. Answer the Public

From the name itself, Answer the Public is a tool where you type your desired keyword and it will automatically show questions.

Although, the free version does not provide you the search volume, it does show you the kind of questions netizens are asking and searching for.

This tool, Answer the Public, is like an indirect communication towards the participants of the internet. Hence, we can somehow compare it to a survey-like response post that serve as articles—the aim of which is to provide an answer to a question.

The keywords we see on this tool are questions or statements that are often asked on search engines; wat this means is that these are real problems and that people are looking for answers.

Also, it means that people typed them on their search engine search bars.

This is basically the reason why it is called Answer the Public. It provides you what the majority or people are curious about. All these keywords have been typed on search engines; what you just do not see is the actual volume.

Answer the Public has a paid version that costs only $99 per month. With the paid version, there are features that are unavailable in the free one.

These features are:

  • Unlimited searches
  • Unlimited users
  • A chart available for comparing data
  • A spreadsheet where you can export data
  • Priority customer support

I recommend a PRO version upgrade if you come to a point where you are already writing dozens of articles, or if you are really serious in making your store or blog rank on search engines.

2. LSI Graph

In SEO, there is what we call Latent Semantic Indexing or LSI.

This means that words are not exactly the keywords for your article, but they are related and close to the main keyword of what you are publishing.

In this example, we will use the term PS. It can mean both Photoshop or PlayStation.  Google will identify what your article is all about by the use of LSI.

Words or phrases like “games” and “controller” in the article tell Google that your article is about PlayStation, not Photoshop. The words “games” and “controller” are what we call LSI keywords.

It is up to you to choose what your desired LSI keywords are. As always, you have to pick those that have volume.

The blue bar charts can be used as your guide. The blue bars indicate a trend for that LSI keyword over time. If you use that LSI keyword, Google may still rank your article or product page for that, even if tat is not your main keyword.

On the right side of the panel, as you can see, this is where the top performing content is shown for the keyword that you are using.

You can visit these links and then read the content—get ideas from your competitors and then try to outdo them with the skyscraper technique.

3. UberSuggest

UberSuggest is a free keyword tool developed by Neil Patel and his team. In this tool, you have to log-in to your Google account to be able to use it. If your own a website, the tool gets data about your sites that are listed in your Google Analytics and Google Console accounts.  

This tool does not only provide and show the search volumes of keywords, but it also recommends keywords. The tool also shows the possible cost you have to pay to Google should you decide to us that keyword for advertising.

This is a sample keyword search on UberSuggest for “dropshipping”.

Take a look at the tool. This will tell you that the search volume for the keyword dropshipping is at 110,000 per month. This means that a high number of people are interested in the keyword.

The SEO difficulty is 76, and this makes it difficult to rank this keyword.

The KW difficulty is set between 0 and 100.  A rating of 100 means that it is a difficult keyword to rank for. This goes similarly with paid difficulty, which means that there is a need for us to pay and invest more on advertising bids for Google to show the ad to more people online.

This tool has an area called keyword ideas.

In this part, different information of other keywords related to the first one you searched for, together with the volume, CPC, and others are provided.

An access to content ideas are also available there are the contents or a list of articles that people have already written and were uploaded online, majority are on high rank on search engines.

4. Google Alphabet Soup

There is nothing more reliable than Google itself.

Google has always been the most visited search engine of all. This is why Google has become a verb that means “search.”

As soon as you type words on the Google search engine, what it does is what you call an auto-complete. This means that without finishing your desired search keyword, the engine will automatically provide topics suggestions just below the search bar.

These suggestions show because a majority of people used these terms on the search engine. It is not a surprise to assume that it could be just an automatic spelling suggestion. However, it is actually more than that.

There are hundreds or even more words that begin with the word “drop”, but the word drop shipping is currently at the top.

Google shows what people are searching for, or what you have searched for. If you only want it to show suggestions based on other search and not include yours, you have to clear your search history on Google, not just your browser.

As you type “best dropshipping a”, Google will begin showing you topics that start with the letter A and that includes AliExpress, Amazon, etc.

But if you type “best dropshipping t”, Google will suggest topics and articles that begin with the letter T including “tutorial” and “tools”.

Keep in mind that these long-tail keywords are topics that people have also searched for.

This will result to you having keywords that have volume. If you use these keywords, you know that here are people who are and who will be using search phrases.

5. Google Trends

Google Trends, from its title, is another effective Google keyword traffic tool. Through this, we will be able to see and observe how keywords are trending over time in terms of search volume.

Here is an example:

We will be using again the example “what is dropshipping.”

If we toggle the settings to worldwide and change the time to 2004 to present, we can see a good trend.

The keyword you searching for is rated from 0 to 100; 100 means that there is an overwhelming interest for the given term.

This will serve as a guide for you to understand if the keyword has a search volume. You are always free to stretch your searches. Experiment in your search with demographics with the use of dropdowns. You can use the categories by country, time and by platform.

The web search area is a dropdown which means they can provide you the software to search for trends in Google news, the search engine, or in YouTube.

This tool is considered the easiest and reliable since it is owned by Google. Which makes it more trustworthy since the results provided are not just guesses, but specific data from Google itself.

6. Google Keyword Planner

The Google Keyword Planner is the kind of tool that advertisers use. This tool shows how much is needed to bid for a keyword to rank. The tool shows which keywords have a high competition. Keep in mind that a Google Ads account is needed to use the said tool.

We will use the keyword “what is dropshipping” as an example.

As you can see, Google is now providing us few of its variations.

The Competition column is where you can see if this keyword is used by many advertisers. A Low and Medium score is what we need so we can get eh most bang for our buck.

In terms of high competition, it means that a high number of advertisers are currently investing on this keyword. The advertiser who has the most money to spend is likely the advertiser that will be shown on search results.

Since advertisers are paying for it, then it means that there is a huge search volume for the given keyword.

It is up to you whether you prefer a low-competition or high-competition keywords.

Also, it is necessary that you also view the Average Monthly Searches column. It tells you the range and the amount of search for a keyword from a specific location including the month you have searched for.

8. Keywordtool.IO

In this tool, it is extremely helpful if you would like narrow down your search on a specific platform.

You have the freedom on how you would like the tool to give you results.

If you would want the results from Amazon, eBay, or in any other platform, this tool can surely guide you with that.

The issue with this tool is that it is not going to five you the search volume unless you subscribe to the paid version. The paid tool costs at least $69 per month.

8. Keyword Sheeter

This is a tool from Chrome extension that provides us the estimated global and monthly search volumes for a search term typed into Google.

Thankfully, the tool developers were generous enough that they have promised to keep this tool free forever.

This tool provides volumes in 19 countries such as USA, UK, Canada and Germany.

This tool is truly helpful for those who are just starting and would like to begin somewhere by searching for other articles that could back up their desired target including other languages that netizens use to describe such terms.


If you are starting or currently on a minimal business, the results using the free tool will work out just fine. 

It is not a question of whether keyword tools are necessary or not—you need them. It is only an issue of how much value you need. For me, I prefer SEMrush as it has all the tools that I need from a keyword research software.

Google is very much aware of the issue with keywords, such as publishing useless content with keyword stuffing. And this made Google innovate its algorithm. Google has released a lot of updates that help combat keyword stuffing.

Today, keywords make up only a small chunk of how an article of product page is ranked.

Choose one of these tools, and then move to SEMrush if you are ready to take your business to a new level. Keyword tools help you make the right business decisions—you cannot just publish a post and expect people to find out, much less expect search engines to index it and rank it.

Always remember however, that value is what you should focus on. Keywords only let search engines know what the content is about, but it is how people react to your content that tells search engines ho to rank your page.
