Overview of Shopify Plans
Shopify has several plans. These are:
The Shopify Lite plan is a social selling tool that costs $9 per month. It does not allow you to build a website on the platform, but you can use Shopify’s payment processing system.
The Lite plan is the most affordable among all the plans, but you have to sell your products on social media channels or other web-building platforms.
The Lite Plan also allows you to accept credit card payments via the Shopify point-of-sale (POS). It is an app that you can download in your Android or iOS device. From there, you input your buyer’s credit card details to close a sale.
The Basic, Shopify, and Advanced plans are aimed towards small-sized and medium-sized businesses. With these three plans, you can build a fully functional online store, create and assign staff accounts, add products, and process online sales.
The Shopify Plus is an enterprise-level plan for big businesses. This is best used by businesses that process at least 500 orders a day.
How much does it cost? It depends. You have to contact Shopify for a quote for Shopify Plus pricing.
Features of the Shopify Basic Plan
Let us now talk about what features and benefits you can get from the Shopify Basic Plan.
Remember, this plan costs $29 per month, and this is the best option if you want to build your e-commerce store on the Shopify platform if you are a beginner.
1. Shopify website | Online Store
With Shopify basic, you can build a store and customize it, and this store is already hosted so you do not have to pay for a web hosting service.
There are hundreds of themes you can use—both free and paid. Shopify itself has about nine free themes that you can choose from.

It is a fully functional website with a home page, navigation menus, hero banners, video banners, sections, and so much more.
The store that you can build with this plan is a fully functional e-commerce website, which means it has Add to Cart Buttons, shopping cart, and checkout systems.
All in all, this website is a complete website where you can run an online business, process orders, issues refunds, and create product pages.
2. Unlimited products
There is no limit to the number of products you can upload to your store at the Basic Plan. Unlike other e-commerce platforms, you can upload as many as you want.
This is great for entrepreneurs who have a large catalog and for dropshippers who are looking forward to selling more than 50 products. I have seen some web store platforms where you are limited to only 10 products, and then you have to upgrade if you need to upload more.
3. Staff accounts
With this plan, you can assign roles to different people, and choose the privileges that they have. If you have a store manager, you can give access to her to process payments, issue refunds, and fulfil orders.
If not, you can assign limited privileges to other staff members, and only allow them to make changes on product descriptions, upload and delete products, or create new collections pages.
4. 24/7 support
Shopify offers 24/7 support t paying subscribers. There are three channels by which you can get support—chat, voice and email.
As a paying subscriber, your best option is chat if you need an immediate answer. You call the customer service hotline if you are from the US, but has no hotline for most of the countries it supports. But it does have a support phone number for those who live in the UK.
5. Sales channels
With this plan, you can integrate your Shopify store with other sales channels such as Amazon, Facebook, and Instagram.
What does this mean? If you integrate your store with your Facebook page, the products on your Shopify store will show up on your Facebook Shop. If you remove one product from Shopify, Facebook is also going to remove it.
Pricing is not an issue. Every detail found on your Shopify store will be replicated in your social media store. These two are going to sync, with Shopify being your primary source of information.
The sites and social media channels that you can integrate depends on your country. For example, some Asian countries serviced by Shopify have no integration with Amazon, but Facebook and Instagram are an option.
6. Manual order creation
Manual order creation refers to you, the Shopify subscriber, entering the details of your customer because you sold a product offline.
For example, a neighbor may have dropped by your house and ordered your product. In this case, the neighbor may have paid you in cash.
To keep your record accurate, you need to enter this order in your dashboard so the reports would reflect the sale. This should help you maintain accurate records for taxes or any other purpose it may serve.
7. Discount codes
At this plan, you can create discount codes for your customers. From the backend, you can create a discount, create the code, and then activate it.
Once it is activated, you can send this code to your customers. If they use that code during checkout, the discount would be applied.
There are two types of discount you can create:
- Percentage – the store would automatically apply a percentage discount to the customer’s purchase
- Fixed price – a specific dollar value will be taken off the total purchase price
You are in control when the discount codes apply, or when they would expire. All you need to do is to go to the discount code dashboard and toggle the settings.

8. Free SSL certificate
What is SSL?
It stands for Secure Socket Layer. It is an encryption technology which ensures that the information that gets transmitted between your website and your customer’s browser is safe and secure.
This prevents hackers from intercepting information between you and your consumers.
Today, all web browsers would give a customer a warning if the website they are trying to access is not secure. If this happens, the consumer will receive something like this:
“The website you are trying to access is not secure. Are you sure you want to proceed?”
Most likely, no, the customer is not going to proceed. If your website has no SSL, your customers will never access your website.
Typically, SSL is not a free service. It is a certificate that you have to renew annually. But with Shopify, it is free.
Once people go to your store, they would see either a padlock icon at the URL or the letters “HTTPS, both of which mean that your website is secure.
9. Abandoned cart recovery
Sometimes, customers fill up their shopping cart, email address, and then they leave. Maybe they changed their mind, or maybe their connection got interrupted.
If this happens, you have a customer who was about to purchase but did not complete it. With Shopify Basic Plan, you will see who these customers are, and you would have a record of their name, email addresses, and their orders.
What do you do with this information?
You send an email reminder to the customer. This can be automated or sent manually.
If you want, you can even offer a discount. If you do this, you must create a discount code for that customer only, and make sure that the discount is only going to work for a limited time.
10. Shipping discount and shipping labels
In Shopify, you can use USPS, UPS, and DHL Express to print your shipping labels. This applies to entrepreneurs who ship their own products but not for dropshippers. With this plan, you can get as much as 64% in a discount from ordinary shipping rates from these companies.
11. Shopify transaction fees
As a Shopify Basic Pan subscriber, you have to pay Shopify a fee for every successful sale. This applies even if you are not using the Shopify payments system to charge your customers.
The fees are:
- Online credit card rates – 2.9% + 30¢
- In-person credit card rates – 2.7% + 0¢
If you are charging your customers through another payment processing system, Shopify will bill you 2% of that transaction cost.
Like the Lite Plan, you can also use the Shopify POS app, or integrate 3rd party POS apps, so you can charge your customers offline.
Who should use the Shopify Basic Plan?
Use the Shopify Basic Plan if:
- You are building a basic store
- You are a beginner
- You do not need hardware support for POS systems
- You are processing less than 100 orders a month
- You do not need a lot of e ploys to run your store
The Shopify Basic Plan is the best plan to launch an online store if you are a beginner, or if you are launching a small to medium-sized business.
This plan has everything you need to:
- Build a website
- Write blogs
- Create collections
- Sync with social media channels
- Accept payments
